Concord Church was established in July 1858 before the town of Athens existed. In fact, the town was first named Concord Church. Around 1897 the community’s name was changed to Athens. The name Concord originated with the church. Concord was established during a time of discord in the church and nation. Sarah Holroyd was asked to select a name for the new church. After considering Biblical names, she said “This Church is where all denominations shall worship together in harmony, sweet fellowship and concord.” Thus, the new church was named Concord Church. Our name, Concord, continues to give witness to God’s grace that transcends any discord in our world and in our hearts. The God of grace continues to call us to worship together in peace, harmony, sweet fellowship and concord.
